Nationally Recognized Thought Leader on Data Analysis Presents Webinar on February 1st
Scottsdale, AZ (January 12, 2012) –Dr. Victoria L. Bernhardt, Executive Director of the Education for the Future Initiative, says that true data decision-making gives schools information about their current situation and clues about what would help them improve, as well as the leadership to improve. Dr. Bernhardt will provide participants with a framework for Continuous School Improvement during part 6 of ENI’s School transformation webinar series, “Data-Enhanced Decisions: Using Data to Drive Classroom Instruction and Remediation,” on Wednesday, February 1, 2012 at 11:30 a.m. PST.
Dr. Bernhardt is well-known for her leadership in using data to improve student learning and affect systemic change. During the webinar, participants will learn:

- How to analyze and use the results for Continuous School Improvement
For attending, participants will receive a signed copy of Dr. Victoria L. Bernhardt's latest book, "RTI and CSI - Response to Intervention and Continuous School Improvement."
Dr. Bernhardt says, “A clear and shared vision and leadership play major parts in data-driven decision-making. If there is no focus or unified front in a school, there is also no continuum of learning that makes sense for students, and no structure to increase student achievement.”
Dr. Bernhardt is the Executive Director of Education for the Future, whose mission is to build the capacity of learning organizations at all levels to gather, analyze, and use data to continuously improve learning for all students. She is also a Professor (currently on leave) from the College of Communication and Education at California State University, Chico.

Dr. Paul D. Houston to Host Evans Newton Incorporated’s Winter 2012 CCSS and Transformational Leadership Symposium
Executive Director Emeritus of AASA Hosts Conference to Help Administrators Lead Their Districts through the Implementation of the Common Core
Scottsdale, AZ (January 10, 2012) – Dr. Paul D. Houston, founding partner of the Center of Empowered Leadership and an advocate for the Common Core State Standards Initiative, will host ENI’s Winter 2012 Common Core State Standards (CCSS) and Transformational Leadership Symposium. Dr. Houston is one of several nationally recognized thought leaders who will be presenting at the conference hosted by Evans Newton Incorporated (ENI).
Dr. Houston said: “For years I have been concerned with the direction of school reform in America. It has taken a very standardized, mechanistic approach that tends to make children focus on the narrow right answers to standardized tests.” He continued, “I have been very excited to see the movement towards a Common Core of standards because that, despite its name, pushes kids to be more open, creative and collaborative—exactly what is needed in today’s world. While there are no silver bullet solutions to education, learning more about the Common Core will put an important tool in educators’ hands.”
Dr. Houston served as executive director of the American Association of School Administrators (AASA) from 1994 to 2008 and has established himself as one of the leading spokespersons for American public education through his extensive U.S. and international speaking engagements, published articles, and media interviews. Attendees will receive a signed copy of Dr. Houston's latest book, "Giving Wings to Children’s Dreams: Making Our Schools Worthy of Our Children."
In addition to hosting the conference, Dr. Houston will moderate a panel discussion made up of nationally recognized thought leaders and practitioners, all of whom are presenting at the CCSS and Transformational Leadership Symposium. Attendees will leave with concrete ideas for implementing systemic change and comprehensive data analyses that lead to increased student learning—keys to success—while transitioning to the CCSS.
The event will be held at the Scottsdale Marriott at McDowell Mountains Resort in Scottsdale, Arizona, from February 8–10, 2012. Dr. Mike Schmoker to Keynote the Winter 2012 Administrators Common Core State Standards and Transformational Leadership Symposium
Nationally Recognized Thought Leader in Education Focuses on the Importance of Curriculum and Lesson Design to Improve Student Learning
Scottsdale, AZ (January 4, 2012) – According to Dr. Mike Schmoker, a nationally recognized leader in education, the U.S. has made only limited progress toward creating truly better schools in the last 30 years of school reform. However, many studies confirm that making essential, simple improvements in curriculum will vastly increase the number of students who are prepared for college and careers. Schmoker will address these issues during his keynote presentation at the Winter 2012 Common Core State Standards and Transformational Leadership Symposium hosted by Evans Newton Incorporated (ENI).
During his presentation, Dr. Schmoker will highlight the three primary elements that educators must focus on to dramatically improve student learning: what we teach; how we teach; and building authentic literacy in both of those. Attendees will leave with best practices that lead to truly substantive education reform.
According to Dr. Schmoker, “By implementing fairly simple best practices (listed above), we can bridge the achievement gap in just a few years.” He continued, “There is compelling evidence that if these three elements are implemented well, they would improve student learning more than all other current initiatives combined.”
The Symposium, hosted by Evans Newton Incorporated, features presentations from education thought leaders and practitioners from across the country. The event will be held at the Scottsdale Marriott at McDowell Mountains in Scottsdale, Arizona, from February 8–10, 2012.
Dr. Schmoker is the best-selling author of the book FOCUS: Elevating the Essentials to Radically Improve Student Learning (ASCD 2011). Dr. Schmoker is a former school administrator, English teacher, and football coach. He has written five books and dozens of articles for educational journals, newspapers, and for TIME magazine. Dr. Schmoker has keynoted at hundreds of state, national, and international events and has consulted for school districts and state and provincial education departments throughout the United States, Canada, and Australia.

Clifton Elementary Sees 138% Improvement in 5th Grade Math Results
Colorado Department of Education (CDE) Publishes 2011 CSAP Results
Phoenix, AZ (August 9, 2011) – In 2009, Clifton was identified as one of the lowest performing elementary schools in the state. Today, they are on their way to becoming one of the highest. The Clifton Elementary of Mesa County Valley School District 51 results show that grades 3–5 scored significantly higher than the goals it set for the 2011–12 school year in mathematics. The objective of their school transformation plan was to meet and exceed the state requirements in reading, writing, and math over the next three years: Clifton did it in one.
Michelle Mansheim, Principal of Clifton Elementary, believes the increases in their interim reading scores were also affected by the work Evans Newton Incorporated (ENI) has supported them with. “This was a complete culture shift for the entire school that spilled over to all aspects of instruction,” Mansheim said.
Clifton’s results demonstrate the rapid impact of the school improvement grant (SIG) they received in 2010. Using the grant funds, Clifton enlisted the support of ENI to improve math curriculum and instruction at the beginning of the 2010–2011 school year, and the results are compelling.
Mansheim stated, “We are so thankful for our partnership with ENI. With assistance in aligning curriculum, setting up processes, coaching of teachers, and assessment, we have been able to make incredible gains in student achievement and teacher growth. We look forward to continuing our work with ENI. We aren’t truly successful until 100% of our students are successful.”
This year, 3rd grade math scores jumped from 49.3% to 72.9% proficient and above, while 5th grade math soared from 30% to 71.4% proficient and above. This comes after years of struggling to make adequate yearly progress (AYP).
In order to accomplish this, Clifton had to overcome major hurdles to student achievement, including:
- A poverty level of 81%
- A staff turnover rate of 50%
- Lack of basic reading and math programs
- A school culture that said its students couldn’t learn
ENI President Tami Zale commented, “ENI is proud to have played a part in the success of Clifton Elementary. From my experience, results like these are based upon everyone in the school—leaders, teachers, and support staff—working together on behalf of students and the belief that every student can learn.”
Principal Mansheim described the school’s transformation in a webinar titled, “Situation Analysis: Identifying Where You Are and Where You Need to Go.” She is also expected to present at the ENI Common Core State Standards School Transformation Symposium in Scottsdale, Arizona from October 5–7, 2011. For more information or to register, please contact Melissa Myers at 800.443.0544 or mmyers@evansnewton.com. You can also register online at www.evansnewton.com/symposium.

Medal of Excellence Winner Shares Experience of Transforming Her Tulsa Public School
Cindi Hemm, Principal of Eugene Field Elementary, Explains How the School Went From a “Prison” to a Place of Learning in Upcoming Webinar
Phoenix, AZ (August 3, 2011) – Since Cindi Hemm arrived at Eugene Field Elementary School in 2003, academic scores have risen from the lowest in Tulsa to some of the highest in the district. According to Hemm, “The school was falling apart both physically and academically. It looked more like a prison than a place of learning.”
Hemm will discuss the school’s impressive transformation in a webinar titled, “Developing A Customized Action Plan,” on August 24th at 10:30am CDT with an encore presentation at 2:30pm CDT. This is the second installment of a nine part school transformation webinar series sponsored by ENI.
Just one year after the implementation of ENI’s School Transformation and Turnaround model Eugene Field won the 2006 Oklahoma Academic Achievement Award as one of the most improved schools in the state. By 2008, Tulsa Public Schools met all the academic requirements for the second consecutive year of AYP as a district. In 2010 Tulsa Public Schools was removed from the Districts in Need of Improvement list.
Hemm says, “I developed a plan. I began re-inventing the school by creating a culture of kindness and caring. I replaced half the teaching staff with those who shared my vision for putting students first, and we went to work implementing the changes our students needed, with TargetTeach® as our academic anchor. The resulting successes have impacted not only our students, but their families and the entire community.”
ENI’s president, Tami Zale, said, “I am excited to have Cindi Hemm share her success story with districts that have similar circumstances. We are proud to have partnered with Eugene Field Elementary since January 2005. It is a great example of how changing the school culture has positively impacted growth in student achievement.”
During the webinar participants will learn how to set measurable growth targets for leaders, teachers, and students, develop customized and flexible action plans using best instructional practices and proven strategies, and ensuring leaders and teachers feel supported throughout the transformation process. The remainder of the series will feature other educators sharing similar success stories.
Hemm is also scheduled to present at the ENI Common Core State Standards School Transformation Symposium in Scottsdale, Arizona from October 5-7, 2011. For more information or to register, please contact Melissa Myers at 800.443.0544 or visit www.evansnewton.com/symposium.

Michelle Mansheim Talks Successful School Turnaround in Clifton, Colorado
Principal of Clifton Elementary School Presents School Transformation Webinar
Phoenix, AZ (June 20, 2011) –.Clifton Elementary has achieved significant gains in its interim test results and Principal, Michelle Mansheim, wants to share her experience. Clifton’s results demonstrate the rapid impact of the school improvement grant (SIG) they received in 2010, after years of struggling to make adequate yearly progress (AYP). Using the grant funds, Clifton enlisted the support of Evans Newton Incorporated (ENI) to improve math curriculum and instruction at the beginning of the 2010-2011 school year, and the results are showing.
Mansheim says, “I truly believe the increases in our interim scores were impacted by the work ENI has supported us with. This has been a complete culture shift for the entire school that has spilled over to all aspects of instruction. I expect to see a significant increase in our Math and ELA CSAP scores in August.”
Michelle Mansheim, principal of Clifton Elementary, will describe the school’s transformation in a webinar titled, “Situation Analysis: Identifying Where you Are and Where You Need to Go,” on June 29th and 30th at 11:30 MDT. This is the first installment of a nine part school transformation webinar series sponsored by ENI.
During the webinar participant s will learn how to quickly evaluate their current school/district's environment; identify and re-evaluate their school/district's objectives; and analyze and mitigate the root causes hampering their school/district's improvement. The remainder of the series will feature other educators sharing similar success stories.
ENI’s president, Tami Zale, said, “I am excited to have one of ENI’s partner schools share their story. We are proud of our work with Clifton Elementary, which is already seeing positive results from ENI’s TargetTeach® process. I traditionally see this in schools and districts that have a strong leadership team and are truly committed to their student’s success.”

ENI Partner District Superintendent named “Superintendent of the Year”
Phoenix, AZ (June 13, 2011) – Mr. Joseph Pye, Superintendent of Dorchester County School District Two was awarded the honor of “2012 Superintendent of the Year” by the South Carolina Association of School Administrators (SCASA) on Thursday. This announcement comes just a few weeks after a District Two school was recognized as Carolina First Palmetto's “Finest”, and the District's Annual School Report Card improved to an overall rating of "Good."
Pye who has worked for Dorchester District Two for 38 years, said “I am grateful for the honor and appreciate all of the district employees who helped me. I share this award with the District Two employees that have worked so hard to help the district compensate for state budget cuts over the past few years.“
Each year, the SCASA Superintendents Awards Committee reviews numerous nominations and selects finalists. Those candidates are then interviewed by a team of education and community leaders. Scores are compiled from the two teams of committees and the winner is announced in May.
Among many noteworthy achievements during Pye’s tenure, Dorchester Two recently has realized unprecedented gains in state test scores in middle school. The district accomplished this in part by implementing the nationally known TargetTeach® Five-Step Process from ENI over the past two years. The district has now expanded the process into its elementary schools.
ENI’s President, Tami Zale, said, “ENI is grateful to play a part in the success of Dorchester School District Two. We have enjoyed working with Superintendent Pye and congratulate him on this well-deserved award. Through dedication to the success of Dorchester’s students, Mr. Pye and his leadership team have attained exceptional results.”

Dorchester School District Two Shows Outstanding Gains in Middle School Achievement using TargetTeach® Process
“Superintendent of the Year” and Leadership Team to Speak about Results
Phoenix, AZ (June 2, 2011) – Dorchester School District Two recently achieved unprecedented gains on middle schools’ state report cards. Five of the district’s six middle schools moved from “Average” to “Good” on their 2010 state improvement ratings. The five improved schools received the South Carolina Palmetto Silver Award for general performance, with three of them also receiving a Silver Award for closing the achievement gap.
Dorchester’s sixth middle school maintained an “Excellent” improvement rating and received the South Carolina Palmetto Gold Award both for general performance and closing the achievement gap. Based in part on the growth in middle schools, the District's Annual School Report Card improved to an absolute rating of "Good" and a growth rating of “Excellent.”
Dorchester District Two Superintendent Joseph Pye, who last week was announced as “2012 Superintendent of the Year” by the South Carolina Association of School Administrators (SCASA), gives credit for the gains to his outstanding staff and their implementation of an instructional process called TargetTeach®. “I couldn’t be more proud of the District Two employees who have worked so hard to help district performance grow while compensating for state budget cuts over the past few years. During this same time, thanks to the dedication of our leadership team and teachers, we have seen improved instruction and exceptional growth in middle schools built around the TargetTeach® process.“
According to Mr. Pye, middle schools in Dorchester have a laser-like focus for instruction because of the TargetTeach process from Evans Newton Incorporated (ENI). “Since organizing middle school efforts around TargetTeach®, collaboration among our middle school teams and PLCs (professional learning communities) has soared. Teachers and leaders are using student data and best instructional practices to guide their shared planning discussions. The results really show the impact.”
ENI’s President, Tami Zale, said, “ENI is grateful to play a part in the success of Dorchester School District Two. We have enjoyed working with Superintendent Pye and congratulate him on his well-deserved award. Arizona State University Researchers Release A National Review of Evans Newton Incorporated's Signature TargetTeach® Program
ENI School Transformation Model Makes Significant Difference in Low Performing Schools
Phoenix, AZ (May 16, 2011) – An independent research study released today by Kimberly A. Scott, Ed.D., and members of an ASU research team, reveals that schools who implemented ENI's whole school transformation model, TargetTeach®, saw significant increases in student achievement. The study used a meta-analytic approach whereby data from numerous studies were pooled to study group effects.
When asked about outcomes of the study, Dr. Scott commented, “This study shows that student achievement after TargetTeach® implementation is associated with a statistically significant increase in passing scores for students on their state standardized test in mathematics and reading. This indicates that, aside from district-level variables associated with implementation, student demographics, or teacher characteristics, the TargetTeach® tools made a difference in increasing student achievement.”
Results for mathematics showed that the percentage of students who achieved proficient or above grew from 53.6% to 73.6% proficient. The percentage of students who scored proficient or above in reading jumped from 50.4% to 70.4%.
After reviewing the most recent meta-analysis, ENI CEO Jamie Piotti said, “We are thrilled with the conclusions of the meta-analysis. ENI has been helping schools improve their performance for nearly 40 years. This study adds to a rich history of data that supports the TargetTeach® process and its effectiveness in elementary, middle and high schools.”
The meta-analysis examined the effect of TargetTeach® from a random sample of nine districts. Participants of the study were randomly selected from students in 3rd grade through high school.
